Question

Curl Error

I am getting this error… any thoughts?
Warning: curl_setopt() [function.curl-setopt]: CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION cannot be activated when in safe_mode or an open_basedir is set in /home/haljohns/public_html/wp-content/plugins/web-traffic-genius-pro/curl_functions.php on line 35

Warning: curl_setopt() [function.curl-setopt]: CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION cannot be activated when in safe_mode or an open_basedir is set in /home/haljohns/public_html/wp-content/plugins/web-traffic-genius-pro/curl_functions.php on line 80

Answer:

Some web hosts can be quite restrictive on how they “lock down” their services and disable a lot of things by default.

If you get an error when trying to get Web traffic genius working (either the word press plug-in or the standalone version) to do with “Safe Mode” or a message to the effect that CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION can be activated when in safe mode, then this is telling you that your web host has not setup their environment to run scripts properly.

Here is what you do….

The best solution is as follows…

Ask them to “DISABLE Safe Mode” and the problem will be sorted out. Tell them you have software that requires safe mode to be disabled to operate. In MOST cases they will do this for you and then web traffic genius will just work.

If your web host is NOT willing to disable safe mode, first swear at them to help with frustration (ok I’m kidding).

Follow on reading to get it working for you in this case…

We have “looked into the future” and foreseen that some web hosts will not be very co-operative and we have added special code to handle these types of party poopers who don’t play by the rules (you know who you are guys).

To achieve this, you need to edit a file called config.php. To do this watch the video I put together showing you how to do this (it’s available to you when you login using the username/password assigned to you when you purchased the software).

It’s also easy to do….

Find this line in the file.

Code:

define(‘CURL_PREFERRED’, 1);

Change it to

Code:

define(‘CURL_PREFERRED’, 0);

Save the file and retry WTG, it’s likely the problem is sorted.

If that fails, replace the 0 with a 2 and see if that works. This should get you working in 99.999999 (recurring) of cases (well a very high percentage anyway). If still no joy reply here and we will see what we can do to help. But it could be time for you to consider moving to a web host that just works for most scripts and plug-in, including web traffic genius.

There are two things to be done here. You can just your cPanel to upload WTG if you wish. Also you can FTP it you want.

Question

Cron Job Inquiries

1) If I set Cron Job to run every 6 hours (4X/day), and the POSTS_PER_CRON_JOB is set at 15, does that mean it will unpack 60 back-dated posts per day or 15 posts per day?

New question 2)
How many backdated posts are considered “in mass”, in other words, too many at a time?

New question 3)
According to the AutoBlogBlueprint, unpacking backdated pages is one of the benefits of using WebTrafficGenius. Aren’t backdated posts “Existing” posts?

New question 4)
Also according to the AutoBlogBlueprint, if a Google-bot hits an still-packed page, it WILL index the WPMage template tags instead of unpacked content. But, since I asked my question here, I’ve learned that isn’t true for BACK DATED still-packed posts. I was worried that I would not be able to allow search engine access to my site until all my backdated posts were unpacked. But, since the Google-bots are unlikely to index BACK DATED still-packed posts until they are pinged by WebTrafficGenius, I’m no longer very worried about the speed of unpacking.

BUT – I still would like to know what a safe, reasonable speed is for unpacking posts. I don’t want to stress my server or the content directories, but I’d like for my internal tagging and linking to be able to get going expeditiously.

Answer:

1. WTG will not unpack posts it will only post send out feeds of posts that are new, in the schedule, or extra feeds.

2. Personally I only do 15 at a time. I do it twice a month

3. Yes backdated posts are existing posts. If your backdated posts are not unpacked they will not be added to the scheduled posts when you hit the post existing button. Now if WTG is active when you create your posts then yes it will unpack them as they are being created. This can cause the issues I talked about above if you are generating a large number of posts. It will also slow down your server and will most likely timeout.

4. Like I said before I only do 15 every two weeks. It is my own threshold that works for me and I then have a schedule to go by to go in and post existing to set up the schedule. When you are running a large number of sites this helps me.

Question

Cron Job Questions

I will be BackDating up to 1,000 autoblog posts, created by my WP Mage plugin, all at one time. I want to unpack them using WebTrafficGenius, so that the Googlebots will index real content, rather than the Mage template tags. My AutoBlogBlueprint instructions say to set up a Cron Job to unpack back-dated posts in blocks of 50 to 100 each day.

My questions are:
1) if I set Cron Job to run every 6 hours and the POSTS_PER_CRON_JOB is set at 15? Does that mean it will unpack 60 back-dated posts per day or 15 posts per day?

2) Should I disallow search engine searches in my blog’s privacy settings until the unpacking is finished to ensure the bots don’t index my Mage template tags?

3) Even at 60 per day, unpacking 1,000 back-dated posts will take 17 days!
If I reset the POSTS_PER_CRON_JOB to 36, and set the Cron Job to run every 6 hours, does that mean unpacking 1,000 backdated posts will be done at a rate if 144 per day and take a more reasonable 7 days before I can allow the search engines to index my site?

4) Is this a prudent action to take? Or is there some reason it might come back to bite me in the butt?

Answer:

If you are using the Mage system it is advisable not to unpack backdated posts in mass. This causes two issues. One is it puts stress on your server and also it may look like you are spamming the content directories. There was a issue with this earlier this year and the article directories block the API coming from the Mage system and nobody could get content for their site. The CRON in WTG is designed to run at the time you set and feed new along with existing, and extra feeds. It will not unpack backdated posts. Also Google if it hits a post in the sitemap that is not unpacked it will unpack then. Google will not see the code of unpacked posts. If is advisable to go into your sites and go to WTG>Options>Post Existing on a regular basis to see if there are any new unpacked backdated posts.

Different Username And Password For Each Separate Blog/Site?

I have two questions:

1. Are those aggregators who want us to create a username and password expecting a unique username and password for each blog on which WTG is installed? (In my case, am I expected to create four usernames and 4 passwords)?

2. Also when it comes to creating extra parameters (parameters 2 and 3), can we use a keyword from the blog and the same password we use to log into the site or with our new keyword username must we create a different password?

Answer:

You do not have to use new accounts (usernames/passwords) for blogs; it’s totally up to you. The export/import functionality is designed to allow you to copy the same set to other blogs. There is always a risk that you might get an account banned if all your websites use the same set of accounts, but unless you are posting heaps everyday on all blogs it’s probably not an issue.

I am not sure what you mean (parameters 2 and 3)? You should only be adding to the username/password and not editing other fields.

Does the feed directory extract each URL inside the .xml feed or it does submit the feed URL as it’s?

Answer:

rssmotron is down so I cannot check at present. but that is not how these sites work. They take a COPY of your RSS feed and re-produce is on your site, linking directly to the URL in the RSS Feed.

Generally a search with a keyword or something unique in your post will show up your content.

You should delete the plug-in and then re-install it. That will take care of the problem.

Question

Do Extra Feeds Need To Be Regularly Updating?

In the WTG manual it explains that the software adds “extra entries” to the RSS feed generated from each new post. For this to work properly is it necessary for the extra feeds we enter to be updating on a frequent / regular basis?

Or, will the software select a number of entries from within the extra feeds, even if the other feeds have not recently updated?

If we have other sites whose content is not updated often, will their feeds be suitable for Additional Feeds for WTG?

Answer:

In theory if you enter enough extra feeds then you would not have to be continually updating them.

The software randomly chooses entries from the extra feeds each time you post.

In terms of the content in the extra feeds it can literally be any content at all, it does not have to frequently updated, etc.
